COVID Procedures

Sterling Grade School Library - COVID Procedures

Students will not visit the library. Library services will be provided in classrooms.
Library staff will visit classrooms for book checkout/delivery, library skills classes and storytime. The initial focus of instruction will be focused on procedures for selecting and checking out books and accessing online resources like ebooks and digital audiobooks.

Your librarians, Mrs. Brownlee and Mrs. Miller, will be providing library services in classrooms.

Book Check In Procedures

  • Books will be returned to designated "Library book return" bins in or near classrooms (with wheels for easy transport to the library).
  • Books will be checked in by library staff and placed in quarantine so that any possible traces of COVID virus will be gone before giving the library item to another person.  Studies show that effective quarantine time is 4 days for books, 5 days for magazines.  After the quarantine time has passed, the library materials can be shelved or checked out to other patrons.

Book Check Out Procedures

 GRADES K-2 STUDENTS
  • Grades K-2 students will check out books in a drawstring library bag once a week.
  • MONDAY is library day for Dowell, Hewitt and Schnurr homerooms. Bring back your library bag (with the books inside) on Monday and you'll get a new bag of books on Tuesday.
  • FRIDAY is library day for Maxwell, Schmidt and Vogt homerooms.  Bring back your library bag (with the books inside) on Friday and you'll get a new bag of books that same day.
  • Kindy = 3 books
    1st grade = 4 books
    2nd grade = 5 books

PRE-K STUDENTS
  • Library checkout will begin in October for Pre-K students.
  • Library staff will visit the classroom on MONDAYS for story time and book checkout. Students may check out one book per week.
 GRADES 3-6 STUDENTS
  • You may check out 3 books at a time.
  • Books can be borrowed for 2 weeks. Magazines can be borrowed for 1 week.
  • On your Library Checkout Day, you may choose a book off the cart and/or request a book through Destiny, our online library catalog.  Books will be checked out and delivered to your classroom.
  • You may request through Destiny at your scheduled Library Checkout Day and time or during Open Request time. There is a sign outside your classroom listing your Library Day.
  • Return books to the white Library Book Return cart by your classroom door. Return books first thing in the morning so we can get them checked in.
  • Already have 3 books checked out? You’ll need to return one before requesting any more books.  Checkouts + Requests = 3
  • You may renew an item to keep it longer as long as no one is on the waiting list

Destiny Discover tips

  • To request to have a book delivered to you, choose a book that is "in" and click "Hold."
  • To be put on the waiting list, click "Hold" on a book that is "out."
  • If an item in Destiny doesn't have a "Hold" button, you're either not logged in or it's a digital book (ebook or audiobook) that is read on a screen.

Library Policies / Overdues

  • LOAN PERIODS - Library books are checked out for two weeks. Magazines are checked out for one week.
  • RENEWALS - You may renew an item to keep it longer as long as no one is on the waiting list.
  • FEES / FINES - There are no late fees. Replacement cost is charged for books that are lost or damaged.
  • OVERDUES - When you receive an overdue notice, you may:
    • Renew to keep the item longer,
    • Return an item you no longer need, or
    • Pay for an item that is lost or ruined (or set up a payment plan).

More ways to read

BOOK AND EBOOK CHECKOUTS
In this screenshot from Destiny, you can see library checkouts. The item on the left is a book. The item on the right is an ebook. An ebook does not count toward your 3-book limit. Ebooks can be checked out and read at any time.
