READING PROGRAMS
  • Sign up for the Summer Reading Program at Sterling Public Library. Check their website for details.
  • Do you have Internet access? If so, our school's ebooks are available 24/7 every single day, including over the summer! Visit our school's ebook page  for more information. The State Library of Kansas provides access to ebooks for kids. Try them out!
  • Participate in the Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza. 
  • Sign up for the CommonLit Free Summer Reading Challenge.
WHAT TO READ
  • Summer reading suggestions for students from Education World, divided by grades level K-8.
  • Summer reading suggestions from ALSC (the Association for Library Service to Children).
  • Students in grades 3-8 can start reading books on the 2020-2021 William Allen White Award nominated list. This is the statewide children's reader's choice award for Kansas. A list of titles can be found on the WAW website. Click on Current Reading List.
  • Wondering if a book has an AR test or what its reading level is? Search the AR Bookfinder site. 
    (NOTE: AR tests cannot be taken over the summer, but students may test on books they read over the summer when school begins in the fall.)

EBOOKS
  • Ebooks are electronic books that can be read from any device with an internet connection: computer, tablet, iPad, or smart phone. Ebooks are available every day 24/7. It's a part of the library that never closes! Learn how to access our school's free ebooks.
  •  Tumblebooks are a collection of animated, talking picture books with fiction and nonfiction read-aloud titles, foreign language books, videos, puzzles and games. They can be accessed at school, at home or on the go from your internet-connected device. Many of the titles have AR tests.

  • Britannica E-Stax features nonfiction ebooks for elementary through high school. 
  • Scholastic BookFlix pairs video fiction books with nonfiction ebooks and includes related activities.

BOOK CLUBS & FUN ACTIVITIES
There are some cool online book clubs students can participate in, or kids could even start their own summer book club. Nothing is more fun than reading a good book and discussing it with friends!
  • Scholastic Kids Home Base website features games and activities relating to popular book series such as Harry Potter, Dog Man, Babysitters Club, Amulet, the I Survived historical fiction series, and more.
  • Flashlight Readers from Scholastic: a club for kids who love books. 
  • Have kids find an online blog about kids' books, or they could start their own blog!
